Metre Square Drawings
When on holiday in Ireland, sitting beside a small lake in a garden when it occurred to me that I could draw about being there; not an observationally recording of the watery surroundings but a response to moments.
This occasion was the beginning of a continuing practice.
Using graphite, interacting with space, light, time and elements, these large drawings, usually executed in the wild, are a response to a place, situation and time. They can reflect various qualities, tranquillity, the power of the wind, cold or heat, constant change, movement and many others. There are particular places I am drawn to work, by the sea, high cliffs, in dense vegetation, dark of night, expanse of wide skies. The manner of executing a drawing of this scale outside can be challenging so the paper can get a bit battered.
I have yet to go to the desert.
